Variable Star feat. Woodland Nymph by Rae Ritchie
I have had a pretty productive holiday break. Although I didn't actually complete a quilt, I did get all of the binding done on one, and an entire quilt top & back finished! My dudes, check out this beauty!
I am pretty damn proud of this one! My points came out much better than I anticipated. I am not sure if its the new sewing machine giving me a better 1/4" seam and therefor my blocks line up nicer, or I am just getting better at this whole quilting thing.
I GUESS WE WILL NEVER KNOW!!!!
This quilt pattern was featured on the first episode of The Midnight Quilt Show on Youtube and has always been a favorite of mine. Speaking of The MQS, I cannot say enough good things about it. Seriously. If you haven't seen it yet and you like quilting, hell even if you hate quilting, you need to watch it.
I found the midnight quilt show while browsing Youtube looking for some quilting tutorials. It was seriously one of the most entertaining video series I've ever seen. The MQS is actually what motivated me to start taking quilting more seriously. Or is it the other way around? Angela does a fabulous job of promoting the "Fuck It" attitude when it comes to mistakes, but in a more PG manner.
Also there is wine. A lot of wine. And snacks. Seriously stop reading this garbage I am writing and just go watch the MQS for a few hours. Even if you have seen it already, go watch it all again!
What was I even talking about? Oh! My quilt! The Variable Star quilt is a free pattern available on Craftsy. The pattern itself is very straight-forward. Make a dick-load of half square triangles and spend 1/3 of your life trimming them down. The time spent is pretty worth it in my opinion though. I love how this top turned out and I have already started quilting it!
Here is the preliminary quilting diagram I made using a lot of inspiration from the original design by Angela, and a lot of inspiration from other quilts I've seen. I still haven't figured out what I will be putting in the negative space, but I will cross that bridge when I come to it. Or just wing it. Whatever!
For the backing, I found some awesome neutral floral at the fabric down the street, and used the remnants from my fat quarter bundle to do a little back detail.
I think that floral matches marvelously! And the backing detail worked out great. I spray basted this quilt together because pin basting kills my soul.
My free motion quilting skills are still a little wonky, but I try not to worry about it. The wavy lines look weird up close, but far away and once washed, you won't even notice! I'm about 30% done with the quilting for this bad boy. Can't wait to be finished and add it to the pile!
Don't worry, I'll post some fancy photos once it's finished.
